Types Of Knee Pain

Knee Osteoarthritis

The knee is one of the most common parts of the body to experience osteoarthritis, a form of arthritis in which the articular cartilage is damaged from general wear-and-tear. Cases of osteoarthritis of the knee have almost doubled over the last 50 years. While there is no direct cure for knee osteoarthritis, the condition can be managed with physical therapy, weight loss, and lifestyle changes. Severe pain might lead to the knee for a total knee replacement.

Meniscus Tear

The menisci are the shock absorbers of the knee, helping your knee absorb the impact of walking and running while also helping with general stabilizing. Meniscus tears are common, as they usually become torn and frayed as a result of ageing, injury, and body weight. When an individual experiences a meniscus tear, this leads to chronic pain and feelings of instability. Tears to the meniscus very rarely heal on their own because of the natural lack of blood in the surrounding area.

ACL Tear

The ACL or anterior cruciate ligament is a key soft tissue ligament in the stabilization of the knee joint, with the responsibility of keeping the knee in stable during rotational movement, but it’s also one of the most commonly damaged parts of the knee. Tears to the ACL usually occur during sports, in which sudden changes in direction and quick stops are involved.

Runner’s Knee

Known medically as patellofemoral pain syndrome, runner’s knee or jumper’s knee is a knee condition common amongst runners, in which pain is felt around the front of the knee. Another condition referred to as runner’s knee is chondromalacia, in which the cartilage beneath the patella has worn away, leading to pain.

Referred Pain

Referred pain occurs when an issue or condition in one part of the body triggers pain in another part, which is a common occurrence with neck pain. For example, if you have neck pain that gets worse with physical exertion, it may be related to a heart condition; neck pain that worsens as you eat can be related to an esophageal condition. Tennis elbow symptoms can be related to neck pain, and cervical degenerative disc disease can lead to neck pain and stiff neck.

Nerve Pain

When the roots of the spinal nerves around your neck become pinched or irritated, they may cause a kind of “pins and needles” pain; sharp, severe, and fleeting pain around the neck and cervical spine region. This pain can shoot down into the arm and the hand, depending on the exact nerve in the spinal cord damage. There is also cervical spine stenosis, or spinal stenosis in the neck, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal around the neck.

How We Treat Knee Pain

  1. Electrodiagnostic Medicine
  2. Interventional Pain Management
  3. Physical Therapy
  4. Acupuncture

At The Spine & Rehab Group, we begin our treatment plans with electromyography (EMG) diagnosis. Along with X-rays, we use EMG to get a full understanding of a patient’s knee pain. EMG is a technology that “listens in'' on your muscles and nerves, helping our experts determine muscle pain or musculoskeletal pain, finding the site of the pain and learning more about the accompanying symptoms.

With EMG results, our board-certified knee specialists and physicians can learn the true nature of your knee pain. From there, our experts use the EMG results to map out your road to recovery and the most viable options to improving your comfort.

Non-surgical therapeutic injections of medications, such as viscosupplementation or anti-inflammatory medications, are one of the most sought after pain medicine options for knee pain. These direct injections provide almost instant pain relief and also decreased inflammation for long-term comfort. Our programs are driven by the principles of evidence based medicine where we exhaust non-surgical treatments as part of your treatment plan.

Interventional knee pain management embodies our holistic approach to pain and rehabilitation. We understand the risks of undergoing surgery and the debilitating effects this can have on patients. With interventional pain management, we offer patients an alternative way to deal with pain in the knees around their femur or tendon without having to undergo downtime or exposing themselves to risks and the possibility of a lesser quality of life post-surgery.

Exercise is often the last thing knee pain patients want to do but physical therapy is a crucial factor in your long-term recovery. Our physical therapy programs are created by our in-house board certified physical therapist, Bethany Weinmann. Our collaborative programs ensure that your knee-centered physical therapy sessions are created with your pain level and schedule in mind.

We integrate different disciplines such as strength training, joint mobilization, and postural alignment to help strengthen your knees and improve your overall strength. Patients who undergo our physical therapy programs often see a drastic improvement on their knee pain symptoms when done regularly.

Direct stimulation of the central nervous system can be especially helpful to patients suffering from knee pain. It is a great rehabilitative technique for both acute and chronic injuries. At The Spine & Rehab Group, our acupuncture sessions are performed by a licensed acupuncturist with years of experience working with knee pain patients. Hair-thin needles are inserted into the targeted area of your knee, with each session lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

Acupuncture is a viable alternative to traditional western medicine, considering the patient’s level of pain. Patients who have undergone traditional knee or hip pain relief techniques such as physical therapy and massage therapy might find immediate and renewed relief with acupuncture. With this practice, direct stimulation of the central nervous system translates into a release of the body’s natural endorphins for instant pain relief.
