Herniated Discs - The individual discs in the spinal column provide a variety of functions, from giving flexibility to the spine to cushioning impact for the individual vertebra. When an individual experiences a bulging disc or a herniated disc, this means that a disc has come out of place, leading to pressure being pressed against a nearby nerve or nerve root. Compressing this delicate nerve tissue leads to sciatica (in which you experience symptoms on a single side of the body) or bilateral sciatica (symptoms on both sides).
Degenerative Disc Disease - As we age and our cartilage becomes thinner and weaker, alongside the natural wear and tear of time, our discs can gradually deteriorate, leading to gradual degenerative disc disease, making discs more susceptible to herniation. When herniation occurs due to deteriorating discs, this leads to what is known as radiculopathy, or nerve irritation. In cases of degenerative disc disease in the low back, this is specifically known as lumbar radiculopathy, causing the sciatica pain that shoots down the legs (sciatica leg pain).
Spinal Stenosis - Spinal stenosis, or specifically lumbar spinal stenosis, is another common cause of sciatica. When an individual develops spinal stenosis, the pathways for tendons and ligaments where the spinal nerve roots branch from the spinal cord (known as the neural foramina) become clogged and narrow. This narrowing of spinal canal leads to the spinal nerves becoming compressed, and thus becoming irritated and leading to lumbar spine pain. Stenosis can be caused by disc herniation, spinal injuries like vertebral fractures, bone spur pain and spinal tumors, and ligament thickening.
Back Injury - Back injury or some form of physical trauma to the back can be an immediate and direct cause of sciatica. Some examples of physical trauma include injuries during contact sports, falling from a great height, and motor vehicle accidents. Other forms of trauma that can cause sciatica but are indirectly linked to the bank include hip dislocation and pelvic fracture, leading to adjacent hamstrings tearing, causing sciatic nerve pain.
The Spine & Rehab group is led by one of the most trusted doctors in Bergen County and surrounding areas. Dr. Amr Hosny has dedicated a lifetime of professional experience working on neck pain and related conditions.
Dr. Hosny is a board certified and Harvard trained interventional spine specialist with training and experience in acclaimed medical institutions such as St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University in NYC, and Harvard Medical School.
Decades of experience working with various cases of neck pain means Dr. Hosny has seen it all. His commitment to helping patients reclaim their pain-free daily lives is embodied by the patient-centered approach we have at The Spine & Rehab Group. We work with each patient to create personalized treatment plans and ensure each individual’s road to recovery.
At The Spine & Rehab Group, we begin our treatment plans with electromyography (EMG) diagnosis. Along with X-rays, we use EMG to get a full understanding of a patient’s sciatica. EMG is a technology that “listens in” on your muscles and nerves, helping our experts determine muscle pain or musculoskeletal pain, finding the site of the pain and learning more about the accompanying symptoms.
With EMG results, our board-certified sciatica specialists and physicians can learn the true nature of your sciatic pain. From there, our experts use the EMG results to map out your road to recovery and the most viable options to improving your comfort.
Non-surgical lumbar epidural steroid injections is one of the most sought after pain medicines for sciatica. These direct injections provide almost instant pain relief and also decreased inflammation for long-term comfort. Our programs are driven by the principles of interventional spine management where we exhaust non-surgical treatments as part of your treatment plan.
Interventional sciatic pain management embodies our holistic approach to pain and rehabilitation. We understand the risks of undergoing back spine surgery and the debilitating effects this can have on patients. With interventional pain management, we offer patients an alternative way to deal with their pain without having to undergo downtime or exposing themselves to risks and the possibility of a lesser quality of life post-surgery.
Exercise is often the last thing sciatica patients want to do but physical therapy is a crucial factor in your long-term recovery. Our physical therapy programs are created by our in-house board certified physical therapist, Bethany Weinmann. Our collaborative programs ensure that your sciatica-focused physical therapy sessions are created with your pain level and schedule in mind.
We integrate different disciplines such as strength training, joint mobilization, and postural alignment to help strengthen your back and improve your spine strength. Patients who undergo our physical therapy programs often see a drastic improvement on their sciatic symptoms when done regularly.
Direct stimulation of the central nervous system can be especially helpful to patients suffering from sciatica. It is a great rehabilitative technique for both acute and chronic injuries. At The Spine & Rehab Group, our acupuncture sessions are performed by a licensed acupuncturist with years of experience working with sciatica patients. Hair-thin needles are inserted with each session lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
Acupuncture is a viable alternative to epidural injections, considering the patient’s level of pain. Patients who have undergone traditional pain relief techniques such as physical therapy and massage therapy might find immediate and renewed relief with acupuncture. With this practice, direct stimulation of the central nervous system translates into a release of the body’s natural chemicals for instant pain relief.
What is the difference between chiropractic care and the treatments at The Spine & Rehab Group?
The Spine & Rehab Group has a holistic treatment approach to sciatic pain and general back pain. Compared to chiropractic clinics with chiropractor back adjustment services, we offer a more extensive suite of services, including diagnostics and acupuncture.
We offer non-invasive to minimally-invasive procedures to help patients manage pain and improve their quality of life. Our board certified physicians don’t offer spinal alignment. Instead, we offer pain relief and rehabilitation through interventional back practice and steroid injections.
What other conditions do we treat?
We treat injuries and pains relating to the muscles and nerves including spinal cord injuries, after surgery care, and joint pain. We also work with the upper and lower extremities and help patients deal with anything from tennis elbow injury, shoulder pain, to knee pain and ankle sprains and general foot care.
Our team also deals with more serious cases involving the spine including herniated disc pain, spinal stenosis, and other vertebrae-related illnesses and conditions.
Regardless of the condition, our treatment approach is always conservative-first and patient-centered. We also offer specialized treatment in the form of sports medicine and acupuncture.
