Marguerite M.An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a procedure that can help relieve pain in your back, neck, arm, and leg caused by inflamed spinal nerves.
During an ESI, a steroid medication is injected into the epidural space, which is the area around your spinal cord and nerves. The steroid helps reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
ESIs are commonly used to treat conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and other causes of nerve pain in the spine.
Pain relief from an ESI can last for several weeks or months, but the duration varies from person to person.
The number of ESIs you can get depends on your individual situation and the recommendation of your doctor.
ESIs are generally safe, but there are potential risks, such as infection, bleeding, and nerve damage.
Common side effects include pain at the injection site, headache, and temporary flushing.
Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your ESI, such as when to stop eating and drinking.
During an ESI, you will lie face down on a table. The doctor will numb the area and then insert a needle into the epidural space. The steroid medication is then injected.
After an ESI, you may experience some soreness at the injection site. You should be able to return to your normal activities within a day or two.
Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are a common procedure used to treat pain in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions of the spine.
