Common Causes and Risk Factors of Bulging Discs

Degenerative Disc Disease

The natural, gradual wear and tear of your spinal discs over time -- disk degeneration -- is the most common primary cause of bulging and herniated disc. Your discs slowly lose water and protein as you age, making them more susceptible to degenerative lumbar spine disease.

Injury or Trauma

Sudden physical injury or trauma can also lead to damage to the vertebra, and thus disc herniation. For example, damage to the cervical spine from a whiplash car accident experience is common; it is also common to experience damage to your discs through physical injury, sports injury, falling, or other forms of sudden physical trauma.

Physical Labor

The relationship between physical work load or physical labor and lumbar disc herniation has been proven in several studies. Individuals who regularly engage in heavy physical work load are more likely to develop lumbar disc herniation over time. If you feel leg pain, chronic neck pain, or back pain from your physical labor, then it might also be gradually breaking down your discs.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle can be a major contributing factor to the health of your discs. Having excess body weight adds extra stress to the back, while smoking reduces the supply of oxygen to the disc, making them more susceptible to breaking down.

How We Treat Bulging Discs

  1. Electrodiagnostic Medicine
  2. Interventional Pain Management
  3. Physical Therapy
  4. Acupuncture

At The Spine & Rehab Group, we begin our treatment plans with electromyography (EMG) diagnosis. Along with X-rays, we use EMG to get a full understanding of a patient’s knee pain. EMG is a technology that “listens in'' on your muscles and nerves, helping our experts determine muscle pain or musculoskeletal pain, finding the site of the pain and learning more about the accompanying symptoms.

With EMG results, our board-certified knee specialists and physicians can learn the true nature of your knee pain. From there, our experts use the EMG results to map out your road to recovery and the most viable options to improving your comfort.

Non-surgical therapeutic injections of medications, such as viscosupplementation or anti-inflammatory medications, are one of the most sought after pain medicine options for knee pain. These direct injections provide almost instant pain relief and also decreased inflammation for long-term comfort. Our programs are driven by the principles of evidence based medicine where we exhaust non-surgical treatments as part of your treatment plan.

Interventional knee pain management embodies our holistic approach to pain and rehabilitation. We understand the risks of undergoing surgery and the debilitating effects this can have on patients. With interventional pain management, we offer patients an alternative way to deal with pain in the knees around their femur or tendon without having to undergo downtime or exposing themselves to risks and the possibility of a lesser quality of life post-surgery.

Exercise is often the last thing knee pain patients want to do but physical therapy is a crucial factor in your long-term recovery. Our physical therapy programs are created by our in-house board certified physical therapist, Bethany Weinmann. Our collaborative programs ensure that your knee-centered physical therapy sessions are created with your pain level and schedule in mind.

We integrate different disciplines such as strength training, joint mobilization, and postural alignment to help strengthen your knees and improve your overall strength. Patients who undergo our physical therapy programs often see a drastic improvement on their knee pain symptoms when done regularly.

Direct stimulation of the central nervous system can be especially helpful to patients suffering from knee pain. It is a great rehabilitative technique for both acute and chronic injuries. At The Spine & Rehab Group, our acupuncture sessions are performed by a licensed acupuncturist with years of experience working with knee pain patients. Hair-thin needles are inserted into the targeted area of your knee, with each session lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

Acupuncture is a viable alternative to traditional western medicine, considering the patient’s level of pain. Patients who have undergone traditional knee or hip pain relief techniques such as physical therapy and massage therapy might find immediate and renewed relief with acupuncture. With this practice, direct stimulation of the central nervous system translates into a release of the body’s natural endorphins for instant pain relief.

Bulging Disc FAQ

Is a bulging disc and a herniated disc the same thing?

Bulging discs and herniated discs are often used interchangeably, with their symptoms and treatments usually being the same.

However there’s a slight difference between the two: when a disc becomes herniated, its nucleus pushes against the annulus or the outer ring, pushing pressure against the spinal nerves, leading to back pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms.

In a bulging disc, the “disc bulge” is the disc coming out of the space but the nucleus doesn’t push out from the annulus. While bulging discs can lead to similar symptoms as herniated discs, there are cases where bulging discs do not cause symptoms at all.

What is a slipped disc?

Slipped disc isn’t really a medically-correct term; it’s an inaccurate term that is often used to describe a kind of disc protrusion, suggesting that the disc has “slipped” out of place. But discs don’t actually slip out of place; instead, a part of their outer shell weakens, allowing some of their jelly-like contents to come out. When this jelly-like substance is released and comes into contact with the adjacent structures such as spinal nerves, this leads to pain and discomfort.

What is the difference between chiropractic care and the treatments at The Spine & Rehab Group?

The Spine & Rehab Group has a holistic treatment approach to bulging disc pain. Compared to chiropractic clinics with chiropractor back adjustment services such as osteopathic spinal manipulation, we offer a more extensive suite of services, including diagnostics and acupuncture.

We offer non-invasive to minimally-invasive procedures to help patients manage pain and improve their quality of life. Our board certified physicians don’t offer spinal alignment. Instead, we offer pain relief and rehabilitation through interventional bulging disc practice and steroid injections.

What other conditions do we treat?

We treat injuries and pains relating to the muscles and nerves including spinal cord injuries, after surgery care, and joint pain. We also work with the upper and lower extremities and help patients deal with anything including tennis elbow injury, shoulder pain, bone pain, knee pain, ankle sprain and fracture cases, and general foot care.

Our team also deals with more serious cases involving the spine including spinal cord injury cases, damage to the cervical spine nerve root (also known as cervical radiculopathy), spinal stenosis, sciatica and sciatic nerve pain, and other vertebrae-related illnesses and conditions causing severe chronic pain.

Regardless of the condition, our treatment approach is always conservative-first and patient-centered. We also offer specialized treatment in the form of sports medicine and acupuncture to help relieve the pain of any permanent injury cases.
